MILLETS
Good for you, Good for the Planet and Good for the farmer
The Smart Choice of Sensible Folks
It’s the most sensible choice of grains– giving a go to the unhealthy refined polished grains and going back to the healthiest grains of India. Let’s also give a go to the ‘why we shifted away’ and take a second look at the super crops and staple diet of our own ancestors of the not so distant past – Indian Millets. Indian Millets – Sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, barnyard millet, foxtail millet, little millet and many other minor millets, were our staple diet from around 4500 BC till just 50 years ago. We considered them ‘course grains’ and rugged as our ancestors and looked down upon them. In just a short span of 100 years of refined foods, we realized how unhealthy and even toxic our diet has become. The time has come for us to be sensible and make personal choices for what is good for us, for the planet and for the small scale farmer. Millets farming
is natural organic cultivation (mostly by default), they don’t require irrigation and are
generally rainfed, they also do not require high doses for chemical fertilizers, they grow even in harsh soils and weather, they are rich in minerals and fibre, and they store well even more than 10 years without spoiling. Explore for more details on the goodness of Indian Millets. Food should be as local and wholesome as possible, and that’s sensible! Millets contain high amounts of dietary fibre, protein, B-complex and E vitamins, essential amino and fatty acids and minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and calcium, and they are also gluten-free. The mineral richness varies with each millet and hence it is advisable to use them separately in small quantities at various times. Millets, as whole grains are nutritious cereals that are good for all, especially for infants, lactating mothers, elderly and convalescents. They are potential preventives against non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular ailments and cancers.
